Plus-Size Bras

If there is one article of clothing that’s always tough to shop for, it’s bras. And when you consider all of the different styles and levels of support that are offered, shopping for intimates can be super overwhelming. Even knowing where to buy plus-size bras (and how to build your bra wardrobe) feels like a conundrum in and of itself. But the stylists here at Dia & Co are here to help. First, let’s talk about how the best bras should fit for women who wear plus sizes.

Stylish Bras that Fit Well

How do you know if a bra fits well? There are a handful of indicators. First, the center band should always remain horizontal (not bridging up the center of your back) and should fit snug on the last fastener. This way, as the band stretches over time you can wear it for longer. Second, you’ll want to make sure there is no spillage or gapping. If there is, you’ll need to size up or size down in cup size, respectively. Cups should be comfortable and flush with your breast all around. Third, make sure the straps are not digging into your shoulders and are able to move without losing the cup support. These are a few tips you can look out for while finding the right fit. 
There are so many different styles to choose from, too, and you may find that sizing varies between styles. So use the tips above when trying on these different styles: 

• Bralettes are a style of bra that offers minimal support and is characterized by simple triangular design with adjustable straps. A plus-size bralette will typically come in M/L/XL/XXL sizing and it all depends on your upper torso measurements. Bralettes are best for wearing in casual moments where you’re going for an edgy or natural look.
• Bandeaus are simple wrap-around bras without straps. Plus size bandeau bras, just like bralettes, will offer minimal support, but are great for wearing under crop tops and strapless tops—especially in the summer.
• Strapless bras vary in their support options and can come with different cup styles, from wireless to wired, from demi- to full-coverage, and are like your everyday bra in every sense (except without straps!). Plus size strapless bras can come with or without removable straps and are a must-have for special occasion dressing. They also typically have a non-slip feature against your skin to help them conveniently stay in place.
• For when you want a little more oomph, push-up bras are for you. Plus-size push-up bras will follow your traditional bra sizing, but they feature added padding in the under-side of the cup, offering a lift in the front. Push-up bras are also available in strapless form, too, depending on your needs.
• Demi bras are characterized by their shorter cups, meaning they offer less coverage, a little lift and skim across the center of the breasts. Sometimes called a balconette bra, plus-size demi bras are often showpieces of lingerie and will come in both everyday and boudoir looks. They’re great for wearing with square neckline dresses and tops.
• Sports bras are great for—you guessed it—all your workouts! But we also recommend plus-size sports bras for everyday extra support, especially while you’re on the go. Be sure to read the full descriptions and find sports bras that will cater to your needs—like high impact vs. low impact sports bras, racerback styles and cropped sports bra tanks that offer more coverage. Whether worn alone or under your tees—sports bras offer total freedom.
• Full coverage plus-size bras are also everyday staples for most people. They feature full coverage on all sides of your breasts as well as broader bands for extra support. Full-figure bras are similar to full coverage bras, but may offer an extension down the torso, and, just like full-coverage bras, can come in strapless styles in every fabrication.

Finding Comfort and Support

Finding good, comfortable bras in plus sizing can be tricky. So can knowing which bra to wear for each occasion. It’s always good to read up on styles and brands that will achieve your optimal comfort and support levels first and foremost. Wireless bras are classic for offering everyday comfort without the pinching or structure of a wired bra. Plus-size front-closure bras make it all the more easy to slip on and off in a moment’s notice—no reaching or pulling necessary. Racerback bras are another favorite of ours, especially when it comes to sports bras. They offer a great range of motion around the shoulders and back, kind of making you feel invincible during workouts. Finally, if you just need total coverage, comfort and support, full-figure bras will do the trick. Their wider bands and cup styles make it effortless to go about your day without any pinching, gapping, or restriction. 

Bras for Everyday

Cute plus-size bras for every day are more plentiful than you might think. T-shirt bras are a classic every day must-have. They are typically made of smooth, lightweight cotton or similar comfort fabric and are virtually seamless under T-shirts. Bralettes and sports bras also make great casual, everyday bras, whether you need simplicity or extra support while running errands. Plus-size lace bras offer both the beauty and the style we all love, but can absolutely be worn every day. It’s important to feel beautiful and a little lace always does it! If you can, try to look for lace bras that are wireless so you’ll never experience pinching again.
